It actually sounds like you have a pretty impressive application when you consider your high master's GPA and GRE scores. They probably rejected you initially on the basis of your relatively undergrad GPA, but then they took another look at your application's other components and decided that you were actually pretty competitive after all. It also probably helped that you applied relatively early in the cycle. Since there are now only 2 interview sessions left at this point, they probably decided to only pick those who are the absolute most competitive applicants.
