I've probably been teaching anesthesia students since before you were even born. There is HUGE variation in capabilities of students WITHIN programs and to a lesser extent BETWEEN programs. Why the variations? Let's see - any or all of the following:
Previous clinical experience vs no clinical experience
Different clinical experience during the program - maybe someone had OB or peds first while others might have been in a busy trauma OR
Good student - bad student
Smart student - stupid student
Student willing to learn - student who thinks they know it all already
Students with an outgoing personality - students with a more introverted personality
Students who are exceptional clinically and not so hot with the knowledge base - or vice versa.
I work with more students from one program than others, and I can tell you that there is a ton of variation in abilities from students at the same point in the same program. But I also work with students from ALL the programs except UMKC, and there is absolutely NOT one program that sticks out above the others, nor does one of them suck worse than the others. It's much more a function of the individual, not the program they're attending.
