Yes, you are correct in that there are few AA programs and even fewer professors at those programs who happen to be female. But still, even if there are rumors circulating at a particular school that a certain female faculty member is involved in a teacher-student affair, unless they have definitive proof that I am the student she is entangled with, the only evidence they have to base their accusation on is both circumstantial and hearsay.
I know that I need to just put a stop to this ASAP, but again, not only are our feelings on the line -- our futures and careers are as well. If the professor is shocked, dumbfounded, and saddened when I break it off, who knows what she will do? I haven't even started clinicals yet and still have to finish taking a class taught by her and maybe another. You are right -- anesthesia is a tight-knit community, and all it takes is one suspiciously negative recommendation or incessant rumor to screw my chances of getting a job with a group in any of the states where AA's can work.
On top of all that, I do have the potential psycho-husband-coming-after-me ordeal to worry about. FWIW, I did not know she was married and had kids when our relationship broke past teacher-student confines.
So you can see, hopefully, that mitigating the situation is not as easy as just breaking it off like a highschool romance. Don't get me wrong, the relationship IS mostly based around sex, but we (especially her) seem to be more emotionally invested even if we don't carry on day to day as a bona fide "couple."
