Actually my family and I have been very lucky and we were not affected.
I just came back tonight from travelling a month, and a week ago I drove from the South to the West of Germany to visit friends who are very close to the flooded areas and many roads and the Autobahn were closed off.
I have to say that in my lifetime I have never seen pictures of such destruction in Germany and my mother says the same. The mayor of one of the hardest hit towns said it was the biggest destruction since World War 2. When I heard that on the radio I thought he was exaggerating but when I saw the pictures I had to agree. I expected houses and cars to be destroyed, but the fact that even the roads were completely destroyed, broken up into crumbles with huge craters everywhere was the most shocking bit for me.
It shows how spoilt we were weather wise so far. Up to now, extreme destruction through weather only happened in other regions of the world and Europe was relatively safe. Time to rethink.
