Mil and I are stuck apart too, and before we moved in together we tried to see each other at least every 3 months. Sometimes if things didn't work out, we'd go four or five months, but anything longer than that was really unbearable.
One thing we'd try to do once a week was watch Doctor Who together. We used to like lying in bed watching shows together, and when we were stuck apart we'd try to play it at the same time while Skyping, so it was almost like watching it "together." Of course it's not the same as having your loved one there next to you, but at least we could laugh at the same moments and I could ask all kinds of questions (I only discovered it when the female doctor started, but Mil's a fan from way back).
Nowadays we try to watch a lot of the same shows, or listen to the same podcasts, so we can discuss things together. Regular Skyping and sending each other photos helps too, even though it is bittersweet because it's painful too.
You have my sympathy...I hope you and your toppy/switchy person can get together soon. *hugs*
