Who is the only woman to have received multiple Nobel Prizes? A - Maya Angelou
B - Malala Yousafzai
C - Mother Theresa
D - Marie Curie
Answer: D - Marie Curie The brilliant scientist Marie Curie was awarded two Nobel Prizes: the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics and the 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The first time she won, she shared the award with her husband, Pierre Curie, and a colleague, for the group’s work on radiation. In 1911 she was the sole recipient of the award, "in recognition of her services to the advancement of chemistry by the discovery of the elements radium and polonium, by the isolation of radium and the study of the nature and compounds of this remarkable element." Interestingly enough, Polonium was actually named after Curie’s homeland of Poland. She was born there in 1867, but when she moved to Paris for her education she met Pierre Curie and joined him both in matrimony and his studies in the field of radioactivity. After he died in 1906, she continued their work and became the first person — not just the first woman — to win two Nobel Prizes. Curie’s daughter, Irčne Joliot-Curie, was also awarded the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with her husband.
