Before its current name was established, the city of St. Paul, Minnesota was named Pig's Eye after the nickname of Pierre Parrant. Pierre "Pig's Eye" Parrant was the first inhabitant to live within the borders of what would eventually become the city of St. Paul. He opened the "Pig's Eye" tavern which became wildly popular in the community. As a result, the growing community around Pierre's bar adopted the name "Pig's Eye". In 1841, the settlement was renamed to Saint Paul by a French priest, in honor of Paul the Apostle. Minnesota was admitted to the union in 1858 with Saint Paul as its state capital.
