The hijacker was Samuel Byck. He killed Officer Neal Ramsburg at the gate. He then entered the Eastern Airlines aircraft and killed the copilot and wounded the pilot. A flight attendant exited a side door and onto the wing where she jumped and broke her leg. Butch Troyer, who was working the airport detail tried to intervene. Byck shut the aircraft door. Butch fired at Byck but the heavy glass stopped his rounds. He then retrieved Ramsburgh gun and fired again. Byck retreated into the cabin and self terminated. Byck also carried a gasoline bomb on board. Spike Miller took the bomb off the aircraft and onto the tarmac. Afterwards we found Buck’s car in the parking lot. A tape recorder was in the trunk. He left a message that he intended to fly the plane into the White House and kill President Nixon. He said he had to open Pandora’s Box and expose Nixon’s corruption. Butch and Spike were true heroes that day.
