Working midnights in northern back in the day but not sure of the year. They were just starting work on Rt 10, thats how long ago it was. Anyway, I got a call of a stolen Budweiser Beer truck in the woods off Old Ordnance Raod. Well, to construct Rt 10 they cut off Old Ordnance road. It Just completely stopped and there was a large ditch where they were doing the construction. Anyway, they dispatched "Budwieser Beer Truck in the woods" and of course everyone on channel one heard it and was "enroute". The Indy 500 never saw such speeds. Anyway, I was tearing down Old Ordinance Road, not knowing it was closed, and went flying off the road into an about 25 foot ditch. No one in those days wore seat belts and I ended up in a ball, on the floor, under the glove box. I managed to get myself out of the car and , sore and hurting, pulled myself up the embankment where Lt Gavin, Don Zeigler, Harry Paesche and all the others (who were racing to the beer truck) were standing on the roadway looking down at me. As I got to the top where they were all waiting Harry Paesch came up to me and opened his trunk and said "Hey Walt, Ive got some really cute little dolls for girls in the trunk that your daughters would love". I believe I threatened to kill him on the spot. For those of you who didnt know Harry, he was always selling shit out of the trunk of his cruiser, to include Seafood.
