Once again American military personnel have been deployed to that region, although — as what has become normal for our elected officials — their exact mission seems to be a well-kept secret.
Aside from that, I continue to be perplexed by President Biden's decision to stick his nose into an event -- the October massacre of Israeli civilians by Hamas -- that has absolutely no connection to the United States. I really cannot figure out what gives the American president any authority to tell the government of Israel how to respond to that atrocious, barbaric attack.
Even more puzzling (to me, at least) is why Prime Minister Netanyahu seems to be trying to let Biden call the shots. Just imagine what the American political reaction would be if Hamas had carried out its attacks on American soil, against American citizens. Our response would be swift and devastating and would have the support of at least the segment of Americans who still can think straight.
I think it is an abuse of American influence for our president to usurp the lawful duties and obligations of the Israeli prime minister, no matter what anyone thinks of him and his policies. This is one case where we should tell the Israelis to do whatever they believe has to be done, tell them we will provide any assistance they require, and just get it over with.
