Anyway, a couple of months ago my son went over to Fort Bragg (now renamed Fort Liberty) to visit some Army friends and he saw a recruiting desk staffed by a few officers from . . . the Anne Arundel County Police Department, of Millersville, Maryland! And among the many incentives being offered to soldiers who were ETS-ing out of the Army to civilian life was a cash payment of up to $20,000, if only they would apply for a job as a police officer and actually get hired. That's more than twice what I was paid in my first year on the job. Of course, money went much further in those days. Everyone wanted to get some rolls of those new pennies the government started making after President Lincoln was assassinated.
How times have changed!
