red lead anti corrosion paint makes sence, as for masts up to fighting top buff, above black is logical and appears correct on some of the relatively few photos

I see from Sammelhaven that models of pre-dreadnought/ironclad RN ships always have the insides of vents/cowls painted red.
This looks nice but is it accurate?
Also, would the 'military' masts of the time have been buff or black. Photos in 'Parkes' suggest black, but is this just from smoke?
Informed advice will be welcome and reference to any paintings of the time that show thes colours.
