Peter Gottschalk will serve as local host, assisted by Harald Scheel, Bill Werner and myself. The SMSC will underwrite the cost of the meeting room and will sponsor the event.
Registration is free but requested so that we can plan appropriately. It will include access to the Seaport's museums, ships, and grounds but no meals or accommodations. Mystic Seaport is a recreation of a nineteenth-century whaling and shipbuilding port and home to the Charles W. Morgan, the world's last wooden whaleship.
Please note that advance registration allows free access to the Seaport as well as the Meeting. Walk-ins without registration will have to pay the Seaport’s $18 admission fee. Please register by sending your name and email address to John Olsen at neslo1250@gmail.com and I will reply with confirmation
The schedule of the meeting will be:
Friday, October 24
7 pm to whenever: Reception at Peter's house in Old Lyme
Saturday, October 25
10 am to 1 pm: SMSC meeting in Masin Room, Mystic Seaport
1 pm to 2 pm: lunch
2-5 pm: visit to fireboat Fire Fighter (if present), the Seaport's preservation shipyard, and other Mystic Seaport attractions.
6.30 pm; dinner (location to be announced)
Sunday, October 25
10 am: visit to USS Nautilus (SSN-571) and Submarine Force Museum (Groton, CT)
Tables will be available for those who would like to sell swap or display models, dioramas, books or anything else of maritime interest. There will be no charge for these but kindly email John Olsen of space requirements by October 1.
The nearest airport is Providence (PVD – 42 miles), then Bradley International (BDL, near Hartford, 74 miles), then Logan Airport (BOS, Boston, 99 miles).
We recommend that you make your reservations for accommodations as soon as possible since some other event appears to already have driven up prices in Mystic. Please consider accommodations in nearby locations such as Groton, New London, or Stonington.
Note that for accompanying family members, Mystic also sports a famous aquarium (including beluga whales) while the town is highly walkable and includes excellent restaurants and dining. Other nautical nearby attractions include the Coast Guard Academy (New London) and the Connecticut River Museum (Essex) (which includes a sailing replica of the Onrust, built by Adriaen Block built in 1614). Fall River, Massachusetts, with the state's eponymous battleship Massachusetts, destroyer Joseph P. Kennedy and submarine Lionfish is 64 miles away while the last preserved heavy cruiser, the USS Salem, can be visited in Quincy, MA (64 miles).
Please don't hesitate to reach out to us if you have any general questions, and to Peter if you have location specific questions.
Hope to see you there!
