These two operated out of Navy Pier in Chicago, with aircraft primarily from Glenview NAS. As a result, many aircraft lost in training are or were in Lake Michigan, near Chicago. The lake there is fairly shallow. One of the planes, recovered intact in 2009 and restored, is an SBD-2 which served on YORKTOWN at Coral sea and was subsequently sent to the states for use in training. It later crashed into the lake in 1944. Previous Message
HAI model of USS Sable which was converted from the Greater Buffalo -( Hugh O'Conner model? )
Along with USS Wolverine, a conversion from the Sea and Bee, the only paddle wheel carriers ever commissioned.
Used in the Great Lakes for pilot training, and their operations have been the source of many WW2 naval aircraft in museums, as they came to grief off their decks in cold fresh water where they could be recovered and restored.
