I agree. When I purchased my 1/1200 ships (Pyro, Renwal and Royal Crown Hong Kong) they were in the $1 range. Back in the 60s Renwal Task Force A (6 Ships) and Task Force B (6 Ships) were $1 for each set. I paid $40 for the set of 12 - that's nuts.
I've looked at the prices on ebay and won't touch any of that stuff. And I've heard the horror stories of paying premium and getting junk.
My 2 cents. Previous Message
I remember when 1250 ships began showing up on eBay. I managed to get several OOP models I wanted at a reasonable price, and occasionally other desired models at prices below what I'd pay a standard dealer. These days when I look, my jaw simply drops at the prices... Many models on offer are still available at known dealers for prices *lower* than those being offered on eBay. Do folks selling those ever actually make sales of them? If so, who's doing the buying - novices/newcomers to the hobby who don't know better? I really don't understand the (apparently) prevailing dynamic. Now, every now and then an OOP model will show up that will merit some attention, and I can see paying a premium for those, but otherwise nothing in the eBay marketplace makes sense (SSModels excluded...). Thoughts?
