My brother Bob and I sailed in the same Noordam II, Hoboken to Rotterdam, in January 1952.

Service: Built for Holland-America Line service between Rotterdam and New York. Converted to troopship for U.S. War Shipping Administration at Los Angeles from Apr 1942. From Sep 1942 to Dec 1943 she made six successive voyages from the West Coast to Honolulu, New Zealand & Australia, Noumea, and other points in the South Pacific. Another six voyages in 1944, including several to points in New Guinea. Two more voyages, including to Guam, in first half of 1945. In Jun she sailed to Europe via the Panama Canal, making several Atlantic crossings and one trip via South Africa to Singapore & Colombo, before heading to Rotterdam via the Suez Canal to be returned to her owners in early 1946.

MV Noordam (1938) was a 10,704 GRT cargo liner built by P. Smit Jr. in Rotterdam, had a cruising speed of 18 knots (33 km/h; 21 mph). In 1942 she was converted to a troop transport and was one of the foreign troop ships under the United States War Shipping Administration in the Southwest Pacific, Pacific and after June 1945 in the Atlantic. She was renamed Oceanien in 1963, and was scrapped in Italy in 1967.
