Sorry to hear that Barry missed out on a Mikasa. If any of you visit Japan and go to see the real thing, you can buy the Konishi Mikasa in a nice display case at the Mikasa Museum Shop. I got one there several years ago. Previous Message
On a beautiful Northern California Saturday afternoon, we met at Paul Jacobs house. There were 20 of us. Paul's dining room table was loaded with ship models and ship related books.
During the "formal" part of our meeting, we discussed reasons why our NorCal group keeps up in impressive numbers, whereas other parts of the country only have small gatherings. Someone suggested: the food at our meetings is always excellent, in addition to the good company. So, East Coast, try if you can beat us.
Despite set backs caused by illnesses, our San Jose chapter was able to display, again, at various events:
At Spirit of '45 they showed off their Normandy exhibit. This annual event in early August always draws a large crowd. Most memorable, again, the singing of the "Rosie's" in their historical attire.
They also had an exhibit this year at the Moffett Field Museum.
And duringSan Francisco Fleetweek in early October, they will display again on the Red Oak Victory.
For the event at the HillVue they will show the Marianna's Turkey Shoot, with a lot of airplanes.
Barry Schrock visited Japan as part of an Asia cruise. His mission: find a Japanese model of the Mikasa, any scale. Unfortunately, his chase was unsuccessful despite the fact that he visited many hobby, toy and souvenir shops.
Kevin Stewart just returned from a combination cruise and land tour of Norway. He was impressed with the very narrow Fjords around Narvik and the fact that the large HMS Warspite made it in and out of these Fjords. The Navy museum in Narvik is also worth a visit. After visiting the Russian border, he made it back to Oslo. He visited the Oscarsborg Fortress, site of the 28cm guns that sank the German cruiser Blücher.
After many, many tries, Jeff was able to get a 5 foot plank of the USS ALABAMA teak.
The newest member of our group, and the one that created our longest discussions, was Tyler. Together with his partner Jenna, they have started a new venture called TenTwenty3d. Check out their website https://www.tentwenty3d.com . Here you can register to be included on upcoming exciting news.
Earlier this year, Tyler started helping Eric Goggans with YestrToys. He became fascinated with 3D printing. Probably in late October, Tyler and Jenna will lease the printing shop in the Amtrak building in Roseville and then take over the 3D printing business from Eric. Eric has a full time job now, but he will stay on as an associate of TenTwenty3D. They are in negotiations with all the designers that used to supply YestrToys with the designs for the printers.
Tyler and Jenna are very familiar with almost all of the Social Media platforms. You might get to see more of their company news on your phone, iPad or computer.
Being a new business, they are looking for investors through crowd funding. They will continue what Eric had started: if you and some of your friends are interested in a certain model, you can collectively finance the new model to cover the file development costs. In return, you and your friends will receive the first copies of the new model. So, stay tuned for more news.
Your photographer is currently physically handicapped. Therefore there are only a few photos this time:
