The excellent Neptun model represents the ship up to December 1939. That month, LEIPZIG was torpedoed by HMS SALMON. The ship limped back to port where she underwent repairs which turned her into a training ship. By March 1941, her catapult and torpedo tubes had all been removed. This model represents the ship after these changes.
Thereafter she returned to limited combat status and survived until the end of the war, though severely damaged when rammed by PRINZ EUGEN in late 1944.
I have painted the model circa 1944 based on drawings in GERMAN NAVAL CAMOUFLAGE Vol.2 by Leon and Asmussen.
This is the easiest SS kit that I have built. It has very few parts, and requires only the addition of top masts' and radar. I made a few other very minor changes to it.
The kit was very inexpensive, only $24 on Ebay.
