It might take me a bit since this came out of the blue, but I will eventually get a site going, and who knows, other sites like XPForge might pop up from all this.
There are no alternatives that I know of that have anywhere the depth and scope of Shapeways. Several of the designers that have posted ships to Shapeways now offer to print their designs directly. Examples are Brown Water Navy (ironclads and ACW ships plus pre-dreadnought navies; Masters of Military (interesting collection of ships, mostly WWII Japanese auxiliaries, but also some very fine WWI ships); and several designers such as C.O.B. and War Time Journal are now offered by XP Forge along with their own designs. Yestertoys offers mostly commercial ships, liners, cruise ships, and just a couple of warships. There are probably more, but I have dealt with these and they are excellent. There is also a list of commercial printers listed on the WTJ page that I have not tried yet. There just isn't a single place to go to look and buy anymore.
Thanks David, yes it was very convenient to have such a huge single-point resource.
I suppose we have to hope that more of the designers will set up their own sites, or migrate to retailers like XP Forge.
