It is easier to cast that way if you are wanting to produce a one-piece casting. Some manufacturers produce separate castings for the secondary guns but this is a more expensive solution in terms of time spent in making a fully assembled model. Early Neptun models of some US ships did have the turrets aligned fore and aft but I think all of those were replaced in the last 10 years of production.
I was looking over my models today and something struck me about my Neptuns that I hadn't noted before. On my BBs and war-built cruiser models that have twin 5"/38 turrets, the turrets are always turned outward, even though during regular steaming they would have been oriented fore and aft. Is this simply a stylistic choice on Neptuns part, or is it easier to cast this way?
