I thought about Pennsylvania and Mississippi, which both commissioned before Ward, at the Battle of Suriago Strait, but PA never fired and MS got off only one salvo, so they can't be credited with any of the Japanese ships sunk there. But are there any older destroyers credited with sinking a U-boat?
That's the one!
I'll hazard a guess of USS Ward, DD-139, for sinking a Japanese midget outside Pearl Harbor
What was the oldest USN ship credited with sinking an enemy vessel during WWII?
