When we have subs in Gibraltar the entrance is a lot narrower and they take some dragging and pushing.
Especially when they are turned around.
At dead slow ahead and the upper part of her rudder out of the water, navigating the dredged channel behind Drake Island to pass through the only shipping exit in the breakwater is not the easiest thing to do at the start of an operational cruise. Once she is in the open sea and can submerge and increase speed, there will be sufficient flow of water over the surface of the rudder to enable the submarine to dispense with the tugs.
