Hi Jim
In 2019, I bought 3 of these gems direct from John himself. He had only 1 that he had completed and painted and he said he had 10 as kits with the PE and plastic parts, and another "couple" without the parts and PE.
I found the email string and your pricing is spot on. He had been selling the Completes for $50 and the kits for $30 plus shipping. I bought his one complete and 2 of the kits, and because I had don him a favor (he accidently sent me a commission build of the French cruiser St. Louis to me and my ordered General Wolf, which I forwarded to the rightful owner for him) He sent me the 3 for $80 instead of the $115 we had agreed to just the previous week. He called the discount a reward for my honesty, although I protested mildly that it had only cost me $5 to get the model to its rightful owner. John was like that.
BTW - John said in the email that the entire run was only 50 models and a couple of spares/test casts.
It appears that Chris at 1250.com has at least one of his hull only kits from the estate sale. I assume John sold all 7 of the other complete kits before his death.
Some years ago now I commissioned the late John Youngerman to make a model of the US Civil War riverine ironclad USS Cairo. Somewhere along the line John decided not to finish it as a commission, but rather as a master he used to produce the model for his model line as YSM-046. Having saved (that's one way of looking at it) the money I would have paid for the commissioned model, I bought seven of the cast ones thinking I'd eventually do a little paint and detail work on each one individually to represent a different ship of the class. Well, I have concluded that eventually is never going to come. Consequently I'm selling six of the seven models. All are pristine in their original boxes, none of which have ever been opened. These are Aquarius-quality models that even have photo etch support structures that would have held tenting over the ships to knock down the heat in the southern summers. I don't recall what I paid for them, but I'm asking for $30 each, and I'm including the postage in that. If you want one (or more) email me at jdavisATsouthalabama.edu
