The recent shoot down of a Chinese ballon over the U.S. wasn't the first time a ballon from a hostile country was shot down over the U.S. 78 years ago on Feb. 23, 1945, a Japanese Fu-Go ballon was spotted over the Mayacamas Range in Sonoma County, California. An Army Air Corps P-38 Lighting was dispatched from Santa Rosa Army Airfield (now the site of Chas. Schulz-Sonoma Country Airport) and shot it out of the sky near Calistoga.
