Robert
Yesterday, 11 of us die hard collectors met at Paul's house for a very enjoyable afternoon. Unfortunately, our friends from Sacramento could not make it, again. Randy just was not up to the long drive.
Bruce had brought a very nice collection of enhanced and camouflaged models. There was a lot of interest in these, because Bruce replaces most masts and gun barrels with more size appropriate wires, in addition to his splendid paint jobs on the camouflage.
Paul had 2 boxes of models for sale and I brought an assortment in 1 box.
All of these models gave us ample material for discussions.
The "formal" part of our get together also leads to many discussions. I gave the group an update of the Kassel meeting that both Kevin and I were lucky to attend. Last weekend was the 3 day ship model event at the International Maritime Museum (Tamm). There are photos on the Steelnavy message board. This Hamburg event is for all scales of models. The exhibits were so plentiful, they were spread out over 6 floors of the museum.
Our San Jose chapter has been especially busy this year: 2 displays in May, one at the Oakhurst Cemetery for Memorial Day weekend and another one at the airport in San Martin.
In August, they participated again at the Spirit of '45 event in San Jose-as usually, this was a very well attended show. Our SMSC members at the show are always amazed, how many spectators come by and ask about specific ships that they served on. This always leads to interesting talks about history.
For Fleetweek in October, they will display a convoy on the RED OAK VICTORY, depending on the weather on the deck or in hold 1 below deck. They put a lot of efforts into these displays. Go visit them there!
For 2023, they have been approached by a Chinese Group that is interested in a display of a Chinese Navy Battle-perhaps 1895. Now they are looking for 1250 models from this time period. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Our next meeting will be scheduled for February 4, 2023, at Tom's house, the house of many, many dioramas, with new ones still being added. Mark your calendars-it will be worthwile.
Yesterday was also the birthday of our youngest member: Don. We celebrated the occasion with a sumptuous chocolate cake. Happy Birthday, Don.
