This had a lot of pictures of the Laker type freighters produced during and just after WWI. Many interesting camouflage designs were seen on the Laker types. Those should be of interest for many. I was also able to find at least three Laker types that eventually served with the Japanese merchant marine in WW2. Those are the following: USS Lakeport (or Lake Port) became the Kosin Maru, USS Lake Champlain became the Meisei Maru, and USS Choctaw became the Syoka Maru. During WW2 I would assume most would have carried a small deck gun aft (3 inch or 80mm type)
