On the Great Lakes, the tug/barge combos are known as "articulateds." They are becoming relatively common there, for all the reasons listed above.

as far as i can tell it is an ITB. integrated tug, barge, this is a tax/crewing dodge to reduce costs. there are hundreds around mostly in the USA on the Mississippi and intra coastal highway!the tug is locked into a cutout in the barge using hydraulic pins, some remain with one barge others away a loaded for an unloaded/return cargo barge to reduce waiting time between trips!

Came across information about the tugboat Galveston, which is "married" to the barge Petrochem Producer.
Seems like a configuration worthy of a scale model, but thus far I've found none. Anyone out there who knows of such a model set ?
