if you eat on the go you also get to see more!
My brother Bob, age 2 at the time, and I age 7, sailed in Noordam II from Hoboken arriving in Rotterdam two days after the devastating North Sea flood of 1953.*
As we sailed up the approach to Rotterdam the tops of the dikes each side of the channel were visible, but beyond the dike tops, both left and right, there was only water as far as the eye could see, with an occasional farmstead roof poking above the water.
I remember the voyage and our six months in Holland and Europe well. I developed a taste for Dover sole, Hungarian goulash, and nasi goreng. Bob was too young to remember the experience, and spent his entire time in Europe eating only ham sandwiches.
We both have two Noordzee Modellen versions of Nordzee II
civilian Holland America Line (NZ-41) http://bob.plord.net/Ships/MS-3/Netherlands/Noordam.html
and
WWII U.S. War Shipping Administration (NZ-42) http://bob.plord.net/Ships/MS-3/Netherlands/NoordamAP.html
in our collections.
We returned to Hoboken via Le Harve and Southampton in Nieuw Amsterdam II (NZ-21B) http://bob.plord.net/Ships/MS-3/Netherlands/NieuwAmsterdam.html
