Re: Oddball bit of maritime information...
THINGS ARE FAR WORSE THAN MAY APPEAR, THE WORLDWIDE MARINE TRANSPORT IS BROKEN AND ABOUT TO FAIL IF THINGS DONT IMPROVE RAPIDLY! the mariners unions want to call a strike to get sailors home , some are almost a year OVER their contract and many have not stepped ashore in 18 months, a chinese port one of the top 5 in the world has been shut for a month, most ports are jammed as there are no truck drivers to move the stuff that has actually been landed, ships are parked outside many ports, and even if you manage to get a slot on a ship you will be very lucky to find a container! part of this is there are not enough people to unload the containers when delivered so are taking longer between voyages!
the one advantage of this is that our overfilled model harbours are now almost realistic!
So, once again today our new suite of kitchen appliances (ordered May 8) did not arrive from the big-box home improvement store from which they were purchased... Apparently the shortage of transoceanic shipping capacity is real. Speaking recently to my sister-in-law, the CFO of a major hotel chain's renovation unit, it's gotten so bad that the big-box store in question has now bought its *own* container ship to try to make a dent in it's backlog of merchandise sitting on wharfs in China and Korea. I wonder if they'll paint the business name in big letters on the hull side... it would make an interesting addition to a 1/1250 fleet!
