According to "The Japanese Aircraft Carriers Soryu and Hiryu" by Miroslaw Skwiot, the supposed reason that moving the island to the port side was not repeated was that the mid ships placement of the island on the port side produced turbulent airflow affecting aircraft recovery. The Akagi trials after reconstruction showed this issue, but construction to Hiryu had progressed far enough along that no more changes could be made. The lessons were incorporated into the design of the next class (Shokaku class).
