Re: Shields on Japanese single 25mm AA guns
Dan: I suspect there is some basis for the model makers to put shields on single 25mm guns. Your photo of the landing craft is the most convincing yet.
Also, drawings in Jentschura's book of single 25mm usually have an additional line on broadside views, indicating a shield? I would guess these authors would try to be as accurate as possible.
They potentially might have been used on the T-101 Landing ships. See the attached pics.
Model of 25mm gun with shield on left side
Type T-101 Landing ship with possible shields on forward single 25 mm guns.
If you blow the color picture up you will have to make up your own mind. But that was the best I could find. Also in Maru Special #50 if you look at the drawings on pg. 50 of the T-101 vs. the T-1 on pg. 54 you will see the T-101 drawing seems to have a straight line coming out of the left side of the single 25mm mounts. This is not there on the T-1 single 25mm mounts.
My guess is that the 25mm mounts could be used to support a landing. The shields would have provided some protection against small arms fire. The gunners legs still would have been vulnerable though.
