each diesel would have had to produce almost 6,000 ihp. After working in a facility that produced diesels that made over 7200 hp from 16 cylinders the 6 cylinder diesels contemplated for the Oceanic III must have been massive. Manufacturing 47 of them at one time would have taken quite a while as they would not have had the advances in machine tools and tooling that we have today, along with the computer controls. The engines would have needed to go in very early in the construction as they were situated in the bottom of the vessel. The maintenance and engineering staff needed to maintain all these diesels would have been quite large.
