Sorry, I was Ambiguous....
As you might imagine, she never asked....
What was Rickoverís answer?
I have been on all of the preserved subs Bob mentioned plus a U-boat in Hamburg (can't recall the number but it is a Type VII and is still there). But the highlight was that my second Uncle was the first skipper of USS Narwhal (SSN671) so we got to go aboard when she commissioned in 1969. Rickover was there and my mother asked her cousin, the captain, why Rickover was wearing a suit not a uniform. He blithely replied, "why don't you ask him, Ruth?" It was a privilege to do this.
I can remember visiting the following subs:
Cavalla (twice - once in the 1960s while still active - and now in Galveston)
Growler (New York)
Dolphin (San Diego)
B-39 (San Diego - Russian Foxtrot - what a hunk of junk)
Trieste II (Keyport)
Maybe I'm forgetting some. I've seen others from a distance, like the Pampanito in SF and a Russian Juliet (in Helsinki!), but didn't manage to get a tour.
How many have you been on?
