there were also plans for an emergency evacuation of POTUS in a dip-Samaritan of the USN to a CVN in case of war, it was calculated as possible to land without a hook but would have to be dumped overboard for normal flight ops! THE RN considered a version of the HS125 Dominie as an AEW with saucer dome, but that would have been fully modified for carrier use. the more i think the more cases i remember. Previous Message
The Potez 56E was actually intended to be embarked on a carrier. Although the trials were successful, nothing further was done in that regard, possibly because it wasn’t practical to carry them on a carrier as small as BEARN. The trials may have been intended to see the feasibility of having them on the larger planned JOFFRE and PAINLEVE. But the Navy did acquire 20 more of these planes under the designation 567, which were used as transports and were not equipped for carrier landing, Previous Message
David,
The U2 tests aboard KITTY HAWK, AMERICA & possibly ENTERPRISE were just tests.
The RANGER actually launched a U2 mission in May 1964 and maybe a second to monitor the French nuclear tests at Murora Atoll in French Polynesia. From the looks of it, these were all sponsored by the CIA under the Office of Naval Research. Also, I did not realize that these were U-2G models and actually had an arresting hook. Some arrested landings were made.
Just learned that the French BEARN also conducted tests with a twin engine aircraft in 1936 with a Potez 56E light transport which was based on a commercial aircraft. It did have a hook! Previous Message
there are only 2 occasions on WARTIME OPERATIONS where land a/c took off AND landed, the Hurricanes on HMS GLORIOUS Norway , and a single Spitfire that had fuel flow problems on a Malta delivery that landed back got it fixed and departed.
all the rest were either delivery trips with the a/c flown off , the Doolittle raid , and trials . did the U2s over do an "operational flight from the carriers, or just the trials?? Previous Message
Which CVs can you name that operated (not ferried) land-based aircraft (took off or landed or both)?
