Re: Convoy ship disposition
the basic layout was 8 rows across of 5 ships deep, the commodore was at the middle of the front row, "valuable" ships, tankers ammo. etc in the centre, CAM or MAC centre rear line so could easily drop out for flight ops! ocean escort AMC or battleship usually dead centre or next to commodore, escorts one ahead , one astern and any others placed according to threat! rescue ships when the became available were at the rear. special convoys could be much smaller or later MUCH larger, up to i believe 200 ships with dozens of escorts.but the larger the convoy the harder to vary the course so they only grew in 1944 when the risk was greatly reduced and the need for invasion material made it necessary!
Can anyone tell me the lay out of a North Atlantic convoy’s ship displacements? Where were the high priority ships such as CAM ships, troop transports and tankers positioned in a convoy. I am building a diorama and this information would be a great help.
