USS ENGLAND and JOHNIE WALKER exploits were far beyond what would be acceptable in a film! and all done without the histrionics required for a film script!
CS Forester wrote the book during the war and I don't think he used either of these as prototypes. Walker's was a hunting group of Black Swan class sloops and was normally used as a rover and not a close convoy escort. USS England had not had her remarkable run of kills yet. This is all, of course, as far as I know and if anyone else knows more, please let us know.
I'm curious, I've not seen the film or read the book. I just wondered if it is based on the 2nd Escort Group led by Captain F.J. "Johnnie" Walker or the USS England or is it total fiction?
