I have mixed feelings about it. Itís entertaining, and never a dull moment. The CGI is very good. That said, as a movie there are lots of basic flaws. Forgetting the rivet counting about technical things and historical facts that we learned ship fans would complain about, I feel that the fundamentals of a good movie are missing. Thereís really no human interest developed. You donít identify with any of the characters, mainly because thereís no character development. The character focus is entirely on the captain, played by Tom Hanks. But his character is one dimensional. You know nothing more about him at the end than you did at the beginning. And thatís not much. The Germans are unseen, turned literally into caricatures of invisible wolves. The result is really just a video game turned into a 90 minute movie.
What made movies like THE ENEMY BELOW, DAS BOOT, and THE CAINE MUTINY into classics was character development. The characters are fleshed out. The viewer identified with the characters and felt part of the drama.
Has anybody seen the Tom Hanks "Greyhound" movie yet, and what did you think? (I have not) Just curious...
