Re: 'The Maggie' ...
Watched it last night...most enjoyable, thanks.
was a film produced in 1954 about the 'misadventures' of a run-down puffer -'The Maggie'. It was released in the US as 'High & Dry' - well recommended.
I was part of the 'paying crew' on VIC32 for a trip from Fort William to Inverness & return.
The other trips they did tended to be in the Clyde Estuary, down to a line approx W - E between Campbeltown & Largs (S of Arran)i.e. 'sheltered water', as well as some that went through the Crinan Canal, and some that went over to Jura. The 'positioning trips' to Fort William were classed as 'open seas' and he couldn't take paying passengers - you were 'invited' and were paid a 'pittance' for your work.
VIC 32 is laid up for 2020 - they cancelled all her 2020 trips less than a week ago. I think she should be 'safe': there's been a lot of work done on her, including, I think a new boiler, but she is 77 years old. (A friend of mine is her 'engineer').
A great holiday ... certainly I enjoyed it - a good ship, good company, good food, good whisky.
The Crinan Canal was mentioned in these adds, so it must have been VIC32...thanks.
The VIC32 mentioned by Tim was used for holidays on the Crinan Canal. Unfortunately the 2020 season has been cancelled due to lockdown restrictions. It remains to be seen if they ever start again
A few years ago there was a Puffer moored at Inveraray, In my memory it was named "Vital Spark" after the Puffer in the Para Handy books and TV series. Whether or not it starred in the series I don't know
