Re: Leftovers from Alang shipbreaking
I used to go out for day trips to ship breakers in Scotland with my dad who sold vetinary stuff in Scotland and Northern Ireland, he'd plan his visits to coincide with interesting arrivals. Mainly at Faslane and Inverkeithing but sometimes Bo'ness and other places. My mum must have dreaded our return home when we went to them. We returned home with all kinds of stuff, I remember signalling flags were one item that raised the question "Why?". On the other hand the hurricane lamps were useful, we hand no electricity. I seem to remember various bits of pottery as well.
I think we saw some major warships being broken up usually within a day or two of arrival any later and major parts were missing. HMS Newcastle, Birmingham. Illustrious, Vanguard and Kenya. I can't remember what merchant ships or smaller wrships we saw. By the time we saw Vanguard, mid morning the day after her arrival most of the 15" guns wer gone.
