It is because being the first of a kind, they did a bunch of experimental work with it. Hal Buell told me that he led an Air Group aboard and flew a F9F PANTHER at the time. Also, they used a bunch of different early jets. As such, I have used F9F Panthers, F2H Banshees, AD Skyraiders, FJ sweep wing Furys, F9F Cougars & of course a Helo aboard the copy I obtained. You can also use some F4U Corsairs as there are still plenty in the fleet at that time.
Hal Buell loved the angle deck and it was the first time he had the opportunity to do "touch & goes" with a carrier.
It is a great model and the only thing that I see is wrong is the "36" marking on the starboard side of the island. All the pictures from this timeframe show it to be on the small piece of superstructure just forward of the rear 5" gun turrets.
I saw the ANTIETAM cutup for scrap in Kearny, NJ back in the early 70s still in its original angled deck configuration so it never got any updates like many of the others in the ESSEX class.
Overall, the model is worth getting!
