Re: USS Oregon Film
Interesting short clips. Thanks.
My attention was drawn this week to the USS Oregon, after I learned that she was once a memorial ship in Oregon, but was seized for use by the government in WWII. Originally the intention was to scrap her, but that proceeded only as far as the removal of her upper works. The hull was left intact. Then, in 1944 a decision was made to harness her as a munitions barge. She was towed across the Pacific to Guam, carrying tons of high explosives for use in demolition work to prepare new airstrips on that island. There she sat until 1956, when she was finally towed to Japan and scrapped.
The first film is brief, but is color and made in 1936, while she was a memorial ship. The other is her in her heyday. Note in that film the large decorative shield on the bow.
