Re: Some thoughts Re: SOME SHIPS FOR SALE FOR CHRISTMAS
I totally agree with your assessment of Johnís craftmanship. His attention to detail you do not always find the the commercial producers mass production models. As you mentioned I too enjoy dealing with John. It is always a pleasure. Thanks John for creating your works of art that add so much to my collection.
Do you buy prints of famous artwork or the original piece? Production models to me are "prints". John's are either original or of a very, very limited production run. They are not like the Navis/Neptuns that you see in every collection. Also, John tries much harder than some manufacturers to "get things right" on his models. Plus, I like dealing with John. He is a nice, honest, knowledgeable guy and really loves the hobby. Furthermore but not relating to the models, even though I have left my name off of this post, John will know who I am.
John does nice hand made models within the bounds of his style. I can understand collectors perhaps wanting to have a sample of a decent hand made, vice a cast model.
What has amazed me over the years is that John continues to make his models for sale despite the availability of existing exquisitely detailed cast models that sell for far less than his rendering. Why would anyone buy the Youngerman version? Yet some one must be buying.
Two examples from his list: a terrific Neptun AG MISSISSIPPI sells for $82 vice $140. Neptun CASABLANCAs for about $75 vice John's $100. The Neptun CASABLANCA has been out for 20 years, so it's not that they are unavailable.
Serious question: would like to hear from a devotee or two why they optfor the lesser quality, higher cost model?
