Peter - per "Australian & New Zealand Warships 1914-1945":
Vendetta: Super clear photo of her at Jacquinot Bay, New Britain, 4 Nov. 1944, confirms written description of her weaponry as an escort destroyer. 4" single guns - NO SHIELDS - in B and X positions. Two single 2-pounder pom-poms; one on a low deckhouse-type structure immediately abaft the after funnel, the other in the former 4" "Z" position. Single, shielded 2mm in each bridge wing, and one each port and starboard on clear deck where former aft TT mount was carried. SL platform now carries standard RN-type "lighthouse" radar. Foremast carries USN standard DD radar at top. No mainmast shipped. Hedgehog launcher in "A" position. DCTs abreast aft gun
house, and DC rails aft. Overall livery is very dark, and pennant numbers are present, albeit very small (USN size) on hull beneath bridge wings, vertically mid-way between waterline and hull break. I can't make out where (supposedly) either 3 x 0.303 Vickers and 3x0.303 Lewis guns were shipped.
Vampire: No photo of utility. Written description: During WWII the aft set of 21" TT was replaced, initially by a 4-barreled 0.5" Vickers MG, then by a single 12 pndr HA gun, with Vampire getting 2 - two pounders. To allow for the additional guns, a bandstand was fitted in the tube space. One 0.5' MG was then added in each bridge wing, and then two more added in the pom-pom platform, that weapon by then having been deleted (poor description, unfortunetely). 50 DC total were carried.
Hope this helps some. I've got four different Oz-published books on their warships and that's the best info on retrofit changes in any of them.
I am researching the Australian "Scrap Iron Flotilla" with a view to converting a bunch of surplus Navis VW DD models to some of its members. But I have run into an inconsistency in armament for the two ships mentioned. Some sources say Vampire mounted quad torpedo tube sets later in her career. Similarly, some sources say Vendetta shipped a quad 2-pounder pompom mount. I have been unable to locate any pictures verifying either modification. Does anyone know if either of these is true and, if so, how they were mounted? Thanks in advance....
