Re: SOME SHIPS FOR SALE FOR CHRISTMAS
I own probably 25 or so JYs. Most of them custom built for me. For example, John did a series of 7 or 8 flush-deck, four-pipe DDs for me in a staggering scope of fits... that ain't gonna happen with a manufacturer. John did an IJN CL for me in its 1922 version, with an under-bridge hangar that's open with a little seaplane coming out of it. I'll never see that from a manufacturer. Finally, I agree with Robert... the fidelity of detail with small things like barrels and bulwark thicknesses are better on John's models. Insofar as the "appeal factor" goes for me, Johns models are right there with Seavee. Two different creatures, but both highly appreciable for what they are. Finally, John's work reminds me that if all of the manufacturers were to go belly up tomorrow, you or I, with a little diligence, patience, and practice, could still enjoy the hobby!
What has not been mentioned is that John's models have guns and masts that are much truer to scale than cast models.
Also, some of us prefer to collect a range of models of the same ship, to compare the succes of different processes and skills in producing an accurate model.
John does nice hand made models within the bounds of his style. I can understand collectors perhaps wanting to have a sample of a decent hand made, vice a cast model.
What has amazed me over the years is that John continues to make his models for sale despite the availability of existing exquisitely detailed cast models that sell for far less than his rendering. Why would anyone buy the Youngerman version? Yet some one must be buying.
Two examples from his list: a terrific Neptun AG MISSISSIPPI sells for $82 vice $140. Neptun CASABLANCAs for about $75 vice John's $100. The Neptun CASABLANCA has been out for 20 years, so it's not that they are unavailable.
Serious question: would like to hear from a devotee or two why they optfor the lesser quality, higher cost model?
