Re: SOME SHIPS FOR SALE FOR CHRISTMAS
Mark - In my case I have quite a number of hand built models in my collection. Quite a few are by John. The factors are differently balanced for each model purchased. Some I purchased or commissioned because there were no readily available or adequate models of a ship I was interested in. Examples: a 3 deck early IJN Kaga, IJN Ibuki (both as cruiser and carrier), some 19th Century Italian cruisers (Hai did them later). Some, like his CA Indianapolis, I purchased because of its exquisite camo job. Some were purchased as a particular sister ship not individually produced.
But the main reason for MY buying these is that, as a modeler myself, I appreciate the art and skill that goes into making the model itself. In the final analysis, I acquire some of these as works of ART. A good photograph may be more accurate, but a great painting is both unique and treasurable. Again, I can speak only for myself.
John does nice hand made models within the bounds of his style. I can understand collectors perhaps wanting to have a sample of a decent hand made, vice a cast model.
What has amazed me over the years is that John continues to make his models for sale despite the availability of existing exquisitely detailed cast models that sell for far less than his rendering. Why would anyone buy the Youngerman version? Yet some one must be buying.
Two examples from his list: a terrific Neptun AG MISSISSIPPI sells for $82 vice $140. Neptun CASABLANCAs for about $75 vice John's $100. The Neptun CASABLANCA has been out for 20 years, so it's not that they are unavailable.
Serious question: would like to hear from a devotee or two why they optfor the lesser quality, higher cost model?
