I am proud to present my next model release:
it is IJN Arisan Maru, a type 2A standard freighter
The first japanase wartime standard building programme for cargo vessels and tankers started spring 1942. This ships were designed also for use after war and were not very well suited for mass production. So end of 1942 the new 2nd wartime building standard programme superseeding the first one. The new designed ships are optimized for massproduction without any view of later commercial use. Machines were designed for a use of one year, hulls for 3 years. The ships lacking any kind of safety features like double hull and the chance of sinking fast after a torpedo hit was very high.
The Type 2A Standard Cargo Ships are 138,75m long, 18,2m wide and a displacemant of 6880 BRT.
One of these ships became part of one of the biggest tragedies on sea in WWII. On Oct. 10.1944 the IJN Arisan Maru, a Type 2A cargo ship, left Manila / Phillipines with approx. 1800 prisoners of war and around 50 allied civilians aboard. 2 weeks later, she was sunk by the US Submarine USS Shark II. Only 9 Prisoners survived.
