Re: War Times Journal -New models
These are nice models, and a good source for those not done by anyone else, like the Japanese semi-dreads SATSUMA and TSUKUBA. Much better quality than some of the junk offered on Shapeways, and prices are very reasonable.
War Times Journal has now begun producing its line of 1:1250 gray SLA models. Unlike the usual 3D models, SLA are produced in gray plastic and tend to have sharper edges and better detail that those you'll find in this scale in Shapeways. For those unfamiliar with WTJ, the line focuses on WWI and the pre-dreadnought era. The models are unfinished, and require painting and, as desired, additional details such as boat davits and masts in many cases.
I have included photos of the SLA USS IOWA which I just finished. Added parts were searchlights, ventilators, topmast, tertiary guns, aft life boats with davits, smoke pipe on the funnels, and an anchor crane forward. This model is superior to the older Navis IOWA, for which no N version exists. That is understandable, since the Navis model is decades old. A comparison photo is below. I have other SLA models from WTJ that I will be working on, and will post photos of them. These are better than their existing Hai or old Navis counterparts, but do require some work to make them compatible with better quality models, such as Navis N, found today. But what is very good about these models is that the hulls, superstructures, and major details are very well executed. And those basic elements are the key to a good looking model.
More information and other examples of these models can be found at the WTJ website, along with prices and ordering information: www.WTJ.com
