Re: Nice film HMAS Canberra just before her loss
A question - I saw the CV in the background, but can we know it was Lex and not Sara?
This film posed a conundrum. At the time of her loss, (shown in the last 20 seconds of the film) CANBERRA, was painted overall "Chicago Blue." During the film one can see USS LEXINGTON in the background. But LEXINGTON was lost in early May 1942, and at the time CANBERRA was undergoing an overhaul in Australia and was not present at Coral Sea. AUSTRALIA was present, but was also in overall blue at the time. The camo pattern also does not match up to CANBERRA which had a pattern in 1940-1. But it does match that which AUSTRALIA previously had. So when was this film taken?
Around March 10, 1942, AUSTRALIA was assigned to long range cover for LEXINGTON and YORKTOWN during the raid on Lae and Salamaua. I believe that this must have been filmed at that time.
