when the political decision was made to go for cat and trap as the price of the STOVL. F35 rose, i believe the contract terms made it ridiculously expensive, almost double according to some reports,to go for the cats which were/are? still not working properly! theoretically it will be possible to upgrade to cats in the future !
Given the RNís experience of operating VSTOL and success with the Harrier, the two ships were initially specified as VSTOL. Fortunately with ski-jump take-off and rolling deck landings there is no need to hover.
HMS Queen Elizabeth was laid down in 2009. However when it was decided in 2010 on cost grounds to scrap the Harriers it was decided to modify the design to CTOL. It then emerged that the proposed catapult fit based on the US EMALS would be expensive and risky having not worked so well for US. This led to talk of converting the second ship HMS Prince of Wales only to CTOL (which would operate F35Cs) and mothballing or selling the other.
But in 2012 it was decided to remain with the VSTOL and continue with the F35 but in its B version on both ships. My only personal comment would be shouldn't they have been called HMSs Ark Royal and Eagle
I've no idea of the current status of EMALS.
