Re: Len Jordan L11 Dilwara troopship (1950) converted to school cruise ship Dunera 1962 (1/1200)
I thought the US ships were more 18+colleges than 11-18 school "fun/holiday" ships like the BI ones?? whilst there was a "schoolroom" it was only used advise what we were doing the next day! was on UGANDA 1970 doing what is now the standard 2 week CANARIES ISLAND cruse from Southampton!
Absolutely! There still are. A couple of US States have had school ships, and I think some still do. California, Maine, and Massachusetts come to mind.
Probably not of great interest to US collectors but having sailed on Dunera in 1964 this took my interest. Below is L11 Dilwara, a picture I found on the internet. There is also an Albatros model depicting the ship in 1936 and different again
1. Remove 2 boats for’ard
2. Bridge one deck higher
3. Add swimming Pool (paint hatch cover)
4. British India colours; Humbrol acrylics 71 for deck, 5024 for masts, derricks, ventilators; RC408 for focsle, ‘fine’ Stabilo permanent marker pen used for the hull black line & thin black line on the funnel. French Curve technical drawing stencil used for for’ard hull line
Sadly finding an L11 will be difficult these days. The photo distorts the angle of the masts which look better in the flesh, or plastic rather!
Here she is in Grand Harbour Malta
Later BI school cruise ships included Nevasa and Uganda. Was there such a thing in the USA?
